This is our first T.O.T.W, and as such should be considered as much of an experiment as an actual T.O.T.W.

In order to help promote individual threads, the TouchZune staff will be promoting a weekly topic, called T.O.T.W. It will show off a popular thread, an interesting thread, or a question that needs answering, and promote it by putting it on the frontpage. It might be an OT thread, or it might be a rumor thread. It will generally be something that the staff deems to be useful for everyone.
Basically, it will be whatever is chosen by the staff to be a thread worth promoting.
If there are any questions, concerns, suggestions, or thoughts, please post in the comments.
T.O.T.W. is not guaranteed to be weekly, and can be discontinued at any time. Promoting your thread to me, or anyone else, can result in your thread not being considered at all. The threads chosen are at the complete discretion of whomever posts the T.O.T.W.

IGN recently held a poll, pitting the two top-dog touch-screen players against each other. The Zune HD and the iPod touch both held pretty steady; with the Zune about 5-8% ahead of the iPod touch the whole time.
Interesting to say the least. One thing to remember is that IGN is gaming website, so it would be logical to assume that the iPod touch would be the most popular (thanks to its massive App Store), however the Zune HD ends up winning. Is this an indication of how the Zune HD will do for the holidays? I'd think so. Anyone else? Say so in the comments!

Microsoft definitely copped some of Apple's lame App Store antics with its tweet-censoring Zune HD Twitter app, so now it's time for the infuriatingly vague PR-speak backtracking -- Redmond just pinged us to say it's "identified the issue" with the Twitter app and that a naughty words-enabling update is coming "as soon as possible." That's a pretty lame response, considering the "issue" is that the app is coded to actively censor tweets -- not exactly an "oops" moment, you know?
|
Microsoft stated:
The recently released Twitter for Zune HD application has been abbreviating some explicit words in tweets when viewed on the device; however these explicit words do appear in their full text on the Twitter site or on any other Twitter client. We have identified the issue and are taking steps to update the application as soon as possible to ensure Twitter for Zune HD users are able to view tweets in their original state.
Issue? How is this an issue? You guys coded it to censor specific words? I am just glad it is being fixed. Hopefully they will add a landscape mode.
It has been updated.

In an unscientific test on ABI, user medion show just how much slower the Zune HD's browser is than an iPhone 3G's. In short, it isn't on a lot of sites. In fact, its faster.

Medion goes on to note that a human error of +/- 1 second is possible. So, considering that, that puts many of the results where the iPhone 3G pulled ahead in the margin of error.
So, that unspoken thought that the iPhone and iPod touch's web browser is faster has been shattered. Pretty badly, too...

It was a slow rollout today, but the promised Zune HD Twitter app is now live in Marketplace. We've been playing with it a little since we got it, and while it's definitely one of the more attractive mobile Twitter clients we've come across, it's also distressingly laggy: it's stalled out several times just scrolling a list of tweets, button presses go ignored, and refreshing data seems to cause all sorts of consternation -- our Zune's dropped its WiFi connection several times now. Not sure what's going on with that, but we've definitely seen some far more polished apps running on the Zune, so we're hoping these glitches get cleaned up soon.

Go to the Zune Marketplace and grab this app!
First Impressions: Solid, yet basic, app. No out the the ordinary functions. You can see your timeline, direct messages, favorite tweets, @replies, and search. I have 1 complaint, no landscape keyboard. Hope this application matures with time.
Also, remember, this is a Twitter-branded app. This means we shouldn't expect any features like twitpic or twitlonger, since they aren't supported by Twitter.

In the meantime, we ask this question of you, our beloved IGN readers: Which portable media player is better in your eyes? There are plenty of facts to consider, which we've provided below for reference, but which player is more appealing to you? Which has more to offer? You decide. Cast your vote in the poll below and share your more detailed thoughts in the comments section.

So, IGN has an article that has a pretty in-depth look at the Zune HD and the iPod touch. Pretty interesting, honestly, especially as it specifically says

...there is no question that the Zune HD has more processing power under the hood...

Interesting read, over at IGN for sure.
